Have you noticed that we often
ask the questions: “Why?—Why is this happening?
Why me? Why now?” I bet that most of the time when we ask these
questions, it’s probably more of an expression of exasperation rather than a
real question. I mean, are we really
expecting an answer or are we looking for God to say something? The irony of this is that if we’re not, we’re
really “dissing” God.
God knows when a bird falls to
the ground (Matthew 10:29). God knows how many hairs are on our heads
(Matthew 10:30). God knows what we’re thinking and feeling
(Proverbs 21:2). God had a plan of
salvation for us before He created the world (I Peter 1:18-20) and He is faithful (II Thessalonians
3:3) to complete every good work that He begins (Philippians 1:6). So God is certainly aware of what is going on
in our lives (Matthew 6:32-33).
It seems to me that God is not
only aware of what is going on in our lives, but He is probably the cause of
it. He may not have created the
situation, but He certainly allowed it to happen. This may be a stretch for some, but whatever
is happening in our lives might be God trying to initiate a conversation with
us. Having said this, perhaps another
question we should ask is, “What?—what are you trying to tell me, LORD?”
This is a scary question, because
of the answer we might receive. But
remember, in Scripture, whenever people encountered a heavenly messenger, the
salutation often began with “Fear not!”
When I read Hebrews 11:6, I hear
the Hebrew writer saying that if we do not acknowledge God and His Presence,
yes, even in the mundane things of life, we cannot experience the living waters
or the abundant life that He offers. In
actuality, the reward is intimacy with Him!
